Mirror, Mirror: What Happens When the Clothes Come Off? (Dysmorphia)

Exhaling Together: Introducing the Series

Let’s start by taking a deep breath and exhaling all the tension, shame, and self-criticism we’ve been holding onto. This series is about stepping into a space where we can be honest, vulnerable, and supported—together.

If you’ve ever felt confident and radiant in your favorite outfit but struggled to look at yourself in the mirror when it’s just you, bare and exposed, you’re not alone. This is something so many of us experience but rarely talk about.

Looking back, I didn’t realize I was going through dysmorphia. It’s only now, after years of studying this topic as part of becoming an image coach, that I can see it clearly. When I scroll through old pictures on my Facebook, I’m barely in them. There are only a few photos where I appear, and I hardly ever took selfies. This wasn’t because I was unhappy with how I dressed or presented myself—I’ve been skinny for most of my life and was always fashionably dressed, giving off an image of confidence. But the truth was, I avoided the camera because I didn’t feel good about how I looked beneath the clothes.

This wasn’t about weight, even though many people associate dysmorphia with weight problems. After having my youngest daughter, I gained some weight, but the deeper issue wasn’t the number on the scale. It was the disconnect between how I appeared to others and how I felt about myself. This series is about exploring that disconnect and finding ways to heal it.

A Safe Space for Sharing and Healing

As we move through this series, I invite you to share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. My goal is to create a community where we can help each other navigate this journey with kindness and support. You’re welcome to comment, message, or simply reflect privately—whatever feels safest for you.

This is not about fixing ourselves but about growing through compassion. We’re in this together.

What’s Coming in the Series

Over the next five posts, we’ll explore:

  1. The Naked Truth About Dysmorphia – Recognizing and naming the struggle.

  2. Why Nakedness Feels Vulnerable – Understanding the root causes.

  3. Breaking the Mirror’s Hold – Small steps to reclaim how you see yourself.

  4. From Criticism to Compassion – Tools to nurture self-love and acceptance.

  5. Building Confidence from the Inside Out – Creating harmony between clothed and naked confidence.

I’m so grateful you’re here, and I hope this series helps you feel less alone and more empowered to embrace your unique journey. Let’s take this step together.
