Closet Detox: It's About Letting Go, Not Just Organizing

The other day, I was hanging out with some friends, and we got into a conversation that really got me thinking. We were all talking about how many closets we take up in our homes and how much of that clothing we don’t even wear. Some of us had pieces we hadn’t touched in years, and others admitted they had clothes with the tags still on. Naturally, the big question came up: Why do we hold on to clothes we don’t use?
This conversation led to something deeper. I explained to my friends that doing a closet detox isn’t just about cleaning and organizing your wardrobe. It’s not just about removing what you don’t need and folding the rest. It’s so much more than that. This process involves energy—it’s a ritual of letting go, which goes far beyond the physical items.
The Ritual of Letting Go: Start with What’s Essential
For me, the first step of a closet detox isn’t organizing. It’s about connecting with your clothes and going through a ritual of letting go. Every piece in your closet carries a story or an emotion, and it’s essential to acknowledge that. Here are a few steps that I consider vital when you’re in the midst of this process:
Connect with each piece: Before you take something out, ask yourself, why am I holding onto this? Does it make me feel good? Do I need it in my life right now? This is the key step to release what no longer serves you.
Allow yourself to detach: Sometimes it’s hard to let go of a piece because of the emotional value we place on it. Recognizing that and appreciating what it brought you in its time helps you create space, not just in your closet, but also in your mind and energy.
Set the right mood: This process can be emotionally heavy, so I suggest creating an environment where you feel comfortable. Put on your favorite music, light a candle, or use a calming scent. Make the process feel more like a personal ritual than just another task on your list.
Value the energy shift: Freeing up physical space also frees up energy in your life. I can tell you, every time I do a closet detox with my clients, I see how their energy changes when we’re done. They feel lighter, clearer, and more at peace. It’s a truly liberating and beautiful experience.
The Organization Comes After
Once you’ve completed the ritual of letting go, that’s when the organization part kicks in. And /here’s something special I want to share: I have an amazing collaborator who offers professional closet organization services. She helps maximize space and ensures everything is arranged functionally and aesthetically. Not only is she a pro at organizing, but she also offers a wide range of services tailored to your needs!
And to make your life easier, I’m sharing some of my favorite Amazon products that can help you keep your closet in order:
